  • A Short History

The Bangalow 2479 postcode covers an area that incorporates the township of Bangalow and a surrounding rural population including St Helena, Coorabell, Possum Creek, Newrybar, Binna Burra, Brooklet, Nashua, Fernleigh, Knockrow and part of Coopers Shoot. The population of Bangalow township and it's surrounding areas in the 2479 postcode ia approx 4,200. Locals joke that it took 100 years to reach 2100 and 10 years to double to 4200.

In keeping with the strong community spirit, Bangalow has a wealth of community organisations, such as Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Bridge Club, Scouts, CWA, Garden Club, Land/Rivercare group, Parks Committee, Playgroup, Pool Trust, Poultry Club, Quilters group, Historical Society and a Writer’s Group. There is a Sports Association as well as Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Bowls, Tennis and Social Golf clubs.

The township has expanded greatly over the past two decades, with several new residential subdivisions spreading towards the township boundaries.  Many new settlers are moving to Bangalow as the character and sense of community in Byron Bay has altered dramatically over recent years and many coastal settlers now prefer the lifestyle that the village offers.

Bangalow is renowned for its strong community spirit and has one of the largest populations of families in the Shire.

Bangalow is also renowned for its picturesque countryside and agricultural pursuits.  The surrounding green, rolling hills are a patchwork of fruit trees, macadamia orchards, coffee plantations, dairy cattle and other agricultural activities.

Many specific events happen in Bangalow throughout the year and it is quickly gaining a reputation as a centre for music and cultural development.

CAPE BYRON HEADLAND RESERVE

15 mins from Bangalow Cape Byron has an international reputation. Rainforest, rugged lighthouse-byron-baycliff faces, stunning views of the hinterland and ocean, and outstanding vantage points for watching whales and dolphins from the headland.

BROADWATER NATIONAL PARK


About 40 mins south of Bangalow.

The Salty Lagoon walk is 3 kms long and an early morning stroll instills feelings of awe at the diversity of fauna and flora. Wet Heathland gives way to Swamp Forest that opens onto the mysterious and tranquil lagoon and it's waterbirds and feeling of long human habitation.

A spirit woman guards the lagoon. Guangun appears as a light in the swamps at night.
